I am always being asked by authors how they can promote their books online. The following list of websites is a good start in finding the right place(s) to market your book online. Please add any websites you feel will be helpful in the comments section of this post.

Addicted to eBooks
Addicted to eBooks was started to help readers find low cost ebooks. This website is great for readers who are watching their book budgets. Addicted to eBooks also allows the author to rate some of the content of their book. If you want to know the level of profanity, violence or sex in a book before you buy it, it’s very helpful that authors can rate their books on this site.

aNobii
aNobii is an online reading community built by readers for readers allowing you to shelve, find and share books. Their mission is to bring book lovers together and encourage reading.

Authonomy
Authonomy is a brand new writing community site for writers, readers and publishers, conceived and developed by book editors at HarperCollins. Their goal is to flush out the brightest and freshest new literature around.

If you’re a writer, authonomy is the place to show your face – and show off your writing on the web. Whether you’re unpublished, self-published, looking to get published, or just getting started, all you need is a few chapters to start building your profile online, and start connecting with the authonomy writing community.

Author Marketing Club

Discover a Book offers authors the chance to sell your book online easily and affordably. You can list your book for sale and you keep all of the sales proceeds. You also keep the copyright and there are no agency fees.

FiledBy
FiledBy is a digital marketing company providing listings, websites, online tools, marketing services and community building solutions for authors, writers and other content creators to connect directly with readers and fans. It’s kind of like “Twitter” for authors – a platform for books and you can have your own author site and post short blogs.

Filedby.com is the most comprehensive online directory of book authors on the Internet. Every published author, co-author or other listed contributor to a book (illustrators, photographers, narrators, editors and translators) either published or imported into the U.S. or Canada has a free listing/website, which they can claim and customize.

GalleyCat Facebook Page
You can post your book in the New Books section, which is an easy way to share your book with their readers.

GoodRead
Goodreads is the largest site for readers and book recommendations in the world. They have more than 10,000,000 members who have added more than 380,000,000 books to their shelves. A home for casual readers and bona-fide bookworms alike, Goodreads users recommend books, compare what they are reading, keep track of what they’ve read and would like to read, find their next favorite book, form book clubs and much more.

iAuthor
iAuthor’s mission is simple yet revolutionary: to give authors across the globe a platform to promote their books. They offer a free platform, an interactive platform and an independent platform.

Indie Books List
This site promotes authors in every category imaginable.

Jacket Flap
JacketFlap is a comprehensive resource for information on the children’s book industry. Thousands of published authors, illustrators, librarians, agents, editors, publicists and publishers visit JacketFlap every day.

Kindle Book Review
The authors featured on Kindle Book Review are often lesser known and up and coming – but not always. You’ll only find books that have at least 10 reviews with a 4.0-star rating or higher. If you’re an author, and you’d like your work reviewed, this is a great site.

Library Thing
LibraryThing is an online service to help people catalog their books easily. You can access your catalog from anywhere – even on your mobile phone. Because everyone catalogs together, LibraryThing also connects people with the same books, comes up with suggestions for what to read next and so forth.
